Feeding schedule by age and size

How many meals a dog needs depends mostly on age. The numbers below are starting points from VCA and the AKC; your vet can adjust them.

Is it better to feed once or twice a day?

For most dogs, at least twice a day is the standard recommendation. The reason is simple: after about 8 to 10 hours an empty stomach starts signalling hunger, so two meals keeps a dog more comfortable than one. That said, some less food-motivated dogs do fine on a single daily meal. Feeding once a day isn't automatically “cruel,” but twice a day is the safer default for most — and worth confirming with your vet for your dog.

When should you feed your dog?

There's no magic clock time. What matters is spacing two adult meals about 8 to 10 hours apart and keeping it consistent day to day — which is why a morning meal and an evening meal works so well. For puppies on three or four meals, spread them evenly across the waking day. Use the tool above to turn your dog's first-meal time into the rest of the schedule.

Now work out how much per meal

Knowing how many meals is half the answer — the other half is how much food goes in each one. Take your dog's daily amount and divide it by the number of meals.

Common questions

How often should I feed my dog?
Most adult dogs do best on two meals a day, roughly 8 to 10 hours apart — a morning meal and an evening meal. Puppies need more frequent, smaller meals (3–4 a day, or more for tiny toy-breed puppies). Pick your dog's life stage in the tool above for the number of meals and a suggested schedule.
Is it better to feed a dog once or twice a day?
Vets generally recommend at least twice a day for most dogs. Feeding only once a day leaves a long stretch with an empty stomach, though some less food-motivated dogs do fine on one meal. If you're unsure for your dog, twice a day is the safer default — and worth a quick word with your vet.
What are the best times to feed a dog?
There's no magic clock time — what matters is spacing two adult meals about 8 to 10 hours apart and keeping it consistent day to day, which most owners do as a morning and an evening meal. Enter your dog's first-meal time in the tool above and it lays out the rest of the day.
How many times a day should a puppy eat?
Puppies eat more often than adults because they have small stomachs and high energy needs: commonly 3–4 meals a day, and tiny toy-breed puppies even more. From around four months, many puppies move to about three meals a day, then to two meals as adults.
How long can a dog go between meals?
For an adult dog on two meals a day, around 8 to 10 hours between meals is typical — after that an empty stomach starts signaling hunger. That's why a morning-and-evening pattern works well. Puppies should not go that long and are fed more often.
