Can Dogs Eat Avocado?

⚠️ In moderation — with a couple of catches

Avocado contains persin (in leaves, skin, and pit) which is dangerous for some animals, and the pit is a choking and intestinal blockage risk. Small amounts of plain flesh in moderation are typically OK for dogs but check with your vet first.

Avocado is widely misunderstood. The TRUTH: dogs can eat small amounts of plain avocado FLESH occasionally — they're more tolerant of persin than birds or horses. But the PIT, SKIN, and LEAVES contain persin (a fungicidal toxin), the pit is a choking and intestinal blockage risk, and the high fat content can trigger pancreatitis. No guacamole (contains toxic onion + garlic).

How much avocado can my dog eat?

A 30-lb adult dog needs about 794 kcal/day, so treats should stay under 79 kcal. That's up to about 3 tablespoons of plain avocado flesh a day as a treat.

A treat limit (10% of daily calories), not a target — assumes an adult dog. Puppies and special diets: use the full calculator.

AKC's framing: 'occasionally in small amounts.' The calculator gives a calorie ceiling, but avocado's high fat is the real limit — a tablespoon of plain flesh is plenty as an occasional treat, not daily.

Is avocado good for dogs?

Avocado flesh has healthy fats and vitamins that earn it the 'superfood' label for humans. For dogs the same nutritional perks apply — but the high fat content is also why portions stay small (too much can trigger pancreatitis).

How to serve avocado

  • Plain ripe flesh only — remove and discard the skin, the pit, and any leaves/stems. Mash a small amount or cut into bite-size cubes.
  • Dogs are more tolerant of persin than birds or horses — that's why the verdict is 'caution' not 'avoid.'
  • Start with a teaspoon or so the first time and watch for stomach upset. If your dog has a history of pancreatitis or is overweight, ask your vet before adding avocado at all.

What to avoid

  • The PIT — choking and intestinal blockage risk. Discard immediately into a sealed bin (dogs love to chew avocado pits).
  • The skin, leaves, stems — all contain persin. Even though dogs tolerate persin better than birds or horses, there's no reason to feed these parts.
  • Avocado's high fat content can cause weight gain and pancreatitis — keep portions small, and skip avocado entirely if your dog has a pancreatitis history.
  • GUACAMOLE — never. It contains onions and garlic, both extremely toxic to dogs.

Common questions

Is avocado toxic to dogs?
Not as toxic as you might have heard. The myth comes from birds and horses, where avocado IS highly toxic. For dogs, AKC says they're more tolerant — small amounts of plain flesh are typically OK. The PIT, SKIN, and LEAVES are the parts to discard (they contain persin), and guacamole is always out (onions and garlic are toxic).
Can dogs eat avocado flesh?
Yes, in small amounts and occasionally — AKC: 'Avocado flesh can be a healthy, tasty treat for dogs, but only when offered safely and sparingly.' Remove the pit, peel off the skin, and feed plain. Skip if your dog has a pancreatitis history (avocado is fat-dense).
What about the avocado pit?
Discard immediately — into a sealed bin if your dog is a counter-surfer. AKC: the pit itself isn't toxic but it's a serious choking hazard AND an intestinal blockage risk, even if your dog swallows part of it. Many vet ER visits start with 'my dog ate an avocado pit.'
Why is avocado considered toxic when most pages say it's OK?
Confusion between species. Persin (the natural fungicide in avocado leaves, skin, and pit) is extremely toxic to birds and horses, but dogs are more tolerant. AKC explicitly puts dogs in the 'more tolerant' bucket — small amounts of plain flesh are typically fine. The pit + skin + guacamole are the real risks.
Can dogs eat guacamole?
NO — guacamole almost always contains onions and garlic, which are extremely toxic to dogs (see our /can-dogs-eat/onions and /can-dogs-eat/garlic pages). If your dog ate guacamole, call ASPCA Animal Poison Control (1-888-426-4435) AND your vet immediately.
Can avocado cause pancreatitis in dogs?
Yes — AKC explicitly warns that 'the high fat content in avocado can also cause weight gain and pancreatitis.' If your dog has a pancreatitis history or is overweight, skip avocado entirely and stick to lower-fat treats.
